L.A.’s Homeless & Their Pets
Rescue Don’t Buy Animals

Dear Mr. Takowsky,

I want to say thank you so much for allowing the publication of articles regarding helping the poor innocent animals in your February 2009 issue (”Rescue…Don’t Buy” and “L.A.’s Homeless and Their Pets”).  Although the stories are heartbreaking to read, these horrible acts against the innocent animals will never cease to exist unless the masses are made aware.  We need to educate the public about what’s REALLY going on out their to millions of our voiceless furry friends.  I myself am the proud parent of eight rescues, I am vegetarian, belong to a number of animal rights organizations and count the one and only Linda Blair (a huge animal activist) among my dearest friends.  It is people like YOU Mr. Takowsky whot are aiding those who care enough to speak up for the animals that give them a public voice and I thank you a great deal for doing that!

On another note, I also would like to commend Celebrity Soup writer Jill Garneski for a piece well done regarding Colombo’s Italian Restaruant and Nightclub.  I frequent that fantastic place often, usually with family and/or my dear friend Gretchen Bonaduce (Danny’s ex) who lives near by as well as Vh1’s Rock of Love II Winner Ambre Lake (we celebrated her birthday there just last week!).  I also attended the SRO Valentine’s Day dinner nite—best V Day I’ve ever had!  It is nice to see that Colombo’s and Vic Parrino are getting the recognition so deserved by keeping the so-sought after family atmosphere in check and carrying on traditional meals through the generations—keeping it real.  Not to mention providing nightly live entertainment with no cover charge…Amazing!  Your magazine is a great one all around!

Denise Ames

Dear BHT,

I just wanted to thank you for your interview with Dr. Ron Paul in the last issue. Dr. Paul is great! I know a lot of people that are starting to get behind his cause for Liberty in this country and integrity within our government. I really hope you guys get him in there again. Keep up the good work!

 Thanks,

John Findlay
Seattle, WA

Dear Suzanne,

Are you guys for real? There is absolutely no redeeming quality to any of your recycled hogwash. Whenever I read your souped up rag mag it makes me afraid to come to Beverly Hills. Your mag lives up to all the stereotypes about your city…plastic surgery, stupidity, unhappiness…if you want people to think differently about you it might be time to rethink the plan.

All sincerity isn’t lost,

Dear Beverly Hills Times,

It’s everyone’s privilege to be foolish, but some people abuse the privilege.

A publication in such a prestigious city as Beverly Hills should meet some minimum standards of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.  And if you’re going to print what are obviously bought-and-paid-for puff pieces, at the very least label them as advertising (or that horrid neologism “advertorial”).

And the design!  There’s such a thing as white space, you know.  Try slipping some of it between the pictures and art rather than cramming everything together like some cheap tabloid.

In these days when newspapers and magazines are in a sad decline, your publication isn’t helping any.

Dalbrecht K. Franklin
Beverly Hills

Yo, BHT!

More pictures of hot chicks!  I mean it, man!  When I pick up a fancy mag like yours, I don’t wanna read about politics or animal rights.  I wanna see pix of chix!

“Big Papa P!!!”

Beverly Hills Times:

Thank God for your publication. These days, when everyone’s worried about the economy, it’s great to find a magazine to focus on pretty faces and pretty clothing.  Sure, you’ve got your Ron Paul columns and other stuff, just to make people feel good about picking up your magazine, but we all know that the most important things in life are fashion and glamour.  God bless you forever!

Principessa McCaughey
Bel-Air

Hi, Suzanne!

I’m so glad that you have a column on animal care.  Not enough magazines cover canine, feline and avian Americans.

But couldn’t you find columnists more qualified than the BARBI TWINS?  This town has enough veterinarians and animal activists to fill Noah’s Ark, but you chose a pair of semi-literate bimbettes to cover this crucial subject.  Honest to Jesus, you have to do better!  Our furry and feathered co-citizens deserve it.

It’s Spring!

It’s Spring!

It’s Spring!

Don’t you just love LA?  I mean, people, this is the best place to call home!  Sure we gripe about the traffic on our freeways and snarl at the long lines of cars at stop lights, but come on—what other place combines such beautiful weather, beautiful scenery and beautiful people?

Now, I’ll grant you, some people who are beautiful on the outside aren’t so beautiful within.  Today, I’ve been dealing with some moderately famous people (I won’t name names) who have been among the most ill-tempered, unreliable, and simply unprofessional people I’ve ever encountered.

But (and this is my main point) how long can you stay upset when it’s spring and you live in one of the world’s greatest cities?  So you butt up against a butt-head or two.  There are a lot of other people in this town who are as lovely and welcoming as a spring breeze.

Take my new assistant editor, David Seidman.  I’ll admit, I had doubts about hiring him.  He’s been in journalism for decades, and I thought he’d be bored  working for a rag that focuses on fame and fashion.  Well, if he’s bored, he doesn’t show his feelings in his work.  I’ve been a bundle of stress recently—we’ve been getting this issue out as I’ve been preparing to leave for Paris—but David’s calmly turned out BHT copy as if he’s done it all his life.

Think about the people who bring spring into your own life.  Whether it’s the son or daughter who aggravates you one minute but fills you with teary-eyed pride the next, or the spouse who keeps you going when you’re exhausted—cherish them.  They’re the springtime of your life.

Justin Timberlake has hit a bump of legal troubles.  It seems he and his touring entourage bowed out of a 2007 concert set for the Staples Center in Los Angeles.  Accoring to papers filed in the L.A. Superior Court, the rights to the debunked concert were held by Andrew Kim.  Kim is asking $30,000,000 in  punitive damages.

Martha Stewart is mourning the death of one of her dogs (Genghis Khan) who died in a sudden propane explosion at a Pennsylvania kennel. Another 16 dogs were killed in the explosion, which occured during the delivery of a propane tank.  The man making the delivery was in the hospital suffering from severe burns.  He managed to save several dogs before he was injured.

Bad news for Coolio, who was busted with crack cocaine at LAX.  A security person found the drug on the rapper as he was going through a security screening on his way to catch a Southwest flight.  Reports say a small scuffle occurred between Coolio and the screener when he was arrested.

Singer Rihanna was given permission by the court to tape conversations between herself and the man accused of beating her, rapper Chris Brown.  The order was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and states that Brown must not “harass, strike, threaten, assault (sexually or otherwise), follow, stalk, molest, destroy or damage personal or real property, disturb the peace, keep under surveillance, or block movements of” Rihanna.  Seems silly now that she’s allegedly back with her abuser.

Amy Winehouse is up to her neck in legal problems again.  The singer was charged with assaulting a fan last year.  The victim says that Winehouse slapped her when she asked for a picture at a charity event in London.

Actor/comedian Robin Williams temporarily put a hold on his recent tour and headed off to the hospital instead to have heart surgery.  Reps state that Williams underwent “surgery for an aortic valve replacement.” If all goes as well as expected, he will resume his tour again in the fall.  Williams released this message to his fans:  ”I’m so touched by everyone’s support and well wishes.  This tour has been amazing fun, and I can’t wait to get back out on the road after a little tune-up.”

Hotel mogul Steve Wynn (67) has called off his marriage to wife Elaine for a second time.  The two were initially married in 1963, divorced in 1986 and then remarried in 1991.    Wynn filed a divorce petition in Las Vegas’ Clark County District Court.  The hotel mogul’s grand fortune is somewhere in the arena of $3.9 billion.  In 1993 one of Wynn and Elaine’s two daughters, Kevyn, was kidnapped and released after Wynn paid $1.45 million in ransome. The kidnappers were later apprehended trying to buy a Ferrari with some of the money.

TMZ was the first to report that Charles “Mask” Lewis Jr., owner of the TapouT MMA clothing line, died when his $300,000 Ferrari hit a light pole and split the car in half. The accident took place in Orange County, California and “Mask” was declared dead at the scene.  A female passenger, who was ejected from the car, was taken to the  hospital.  Police on the scene suggest that “Mask” was street racing with a Porsche.  Police later arrested the driver of the Porche, Jeffrey David Kirby, who had fled the scene.  He was held on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter.

Reports have Sarah Palin’s unwed-teenage daughter Bristol giving her baby daddy the boot.

An odd looking and even stranger acting Joaquin Phoenix reportedly flew off stage and jumped at a fan in the audience at a Miami concert.  The way Phoenix has been acting lately it’s hard to tell what is going on with him and why.

TANZORE: Superb Modern Indian Cuisine

As soon as you pass the exotic doors and see the white marble from India, Tanzore takes you into a different world. It’s a Bollywood world of art, fashion, cinema, and travel.

You’ll be tempted to linger at  the colorful bar and lounge. But do enter the dining room, because the cuisine is impeccable.

Fresh spices are used within every dish.  Their savory flavors become truly evident when you taste the Tandoor Tiger Prawns, the Bombay–L.A. Melange, and the Kashmiri Lamb Curry.  There is even a “Holy Cow” Menu for the vegetarian, with Tandoori Florets and Spicy Veg Kebabs.

For dessert, try the Yogurt Panna Cotta or the Indian Spiced Apple Gallette.  The astonishing 2,000-bottle wine cellar distinguishes Tanzore from other Indian restaurants, and the Haveli Room is perfect for the best in private dining!

PARQ

Located within the prestigious Montage Hotel, Parq is beyond impressive.  Not only is Parq deserving of the highest praise for spectacular service, but you will find an extensive wine list, presented by the restaurant’s brilliant sommelier.   As for the food, Executive Chef John Cuevas presents an elaborate menu created from the freshest ingredients.

The delectable Hamachi Sashimi is an excellent start.  The Lobster Bisque is unbelievable.  The Roasted East Coast Cod is perfectly executed.  The Original 28 Day Dry-Aged Coffee Crusted New York Strip, made with bourbon caramel, is beyond memorable.  And finish with a fabulous selection of fine desserts and dessert wines that come recommended by Parq’s culinary masters.

Surya India : Food Review :

April 10, 2009 by Beverly Hills Times

Walking into Surya restaurant, you immediately notice the oversized and richly colored photographs of India against the beautiful, saffron-colored walls.   The spotless dining room and beautiful décor make it clear that Surya is not your typical Indian eatery.  The restaurant is dimly lit and the music is soft and calming, giving it a serene and romantic atmosphere that is perfect for conversation.

The restaurant’s friendly owner, Sheel Joshi, is usually there to greet you at the door and offer his advice on what to order.  The food is vibrant and exciting, and every dish prepared is a link to the owner’s northern Indian heritage.  The wine and beer list is sophisticated and well thought out to complement the entrees.  They offer Indian and imported beers and well-paired wines from Italy, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Chile.  The Chicken Mangalorean, their signature dish, is savory and delicious, and goes well with the basmati rice.  I recommend this dish to anyone trying Indian food for the first time.  If you are unsure of what to order, don’t hesitate to ask the friendly and knowledgeable staff for recommendations.

The menu may not be as extensive as other restaurants, but every dish is exceptionally good, which makes ordering easy.  The freshly made naan breads are served hot right out of the oven and come in a variety of flavors such as garlic, onion, and Kabuli.  The Chicken Tikka Kabab is moist, succulent and cooked to perfection.  It comes charbroiled and smoky on the outside, and tender and soft on the inside.  In addition to chicken and lamb favorites, Surya incorporates sea bass (sumptuously prepared in the tandoori style), tuna and turkey dishes.  The sweet spiced mango chutney and raita (yogurt and cucumber sauce) are perfect sides to almost anything on the menu.  The mint chicken (cooked with a spicy mint and cilantro sauce) and ginger lamb are two exceptionally flavorful dishes that are definitely worth trying.

If you aren’t a meat eater, there are some excellent vegetarian dishes.  Two of the best are the simple vegetable birianyi (basmati rice perfumed with sweet spices and served with raita) and the vegetable samosas (crispy turnover stuffed with spiced potatoes and peas).   Surya’s fine desserts make a nice ending to the night, such as the chocolate truffle mousse or the delectable rice pudding.

Surya is unlike any other Indian restaurant in that its chefs use only the freshest ingredients and do not prepare their dishes with ghee (clarified butter commonly used in Indian dishes), so the meals are never too heavy but instead healthy and satisfying.  Each dish has a distinct flavor and shouldn’t be missed, so going in larger groups is a good way to try more of the menu!

Cheese Matters: Oscar Flavor & Birthday

Two cheese-centric adventures were in store for The Cheese Impresario.

First: awards season in Hollywood.  I served artisanal cheeses at HAVEN, an Oscar-season celebrity-retreat marble mansion where we celebrated The Wrestler with folks from World Wrestling Entertainment.  I ran into my friend Alyssa Rapp, founder of Bottlenotes, a wine club using technology much like Netflix.  She was enjoying Joe Widmer’s Aged Brick Spread with her 2006 Cannonball Cabernet Sauvignon.  Cheese spread isn’t something you’d think of when you think artisanal cheese, but the spread was the hit of the event.  People kept coming back for more. Alyssa even has a book out in stores, Bottlenotes Guide to Wine: Around the World in 80 Sips.

The second cheese adventure: my friend Adam Leemon, AKA “Adam The Wine Guy,” turned me on to the wines of Demetria Estate.  Once I tried Demetria’s 2006 Cuvee Papou, I had to visit the winery.  I packed my bags, put amazing cheeses in my cooler and hit the road.

My tasting adventure included Demetria Estate owner John Zahoudanis, winemaker Michael Roth and assistant winemaker Brandon Sparks-Gillis.  I experienced their Rhone varietals, all grown on John’s romantic estate.  We loved Carr Valley Cheese Company’s Cave Aged Mellage with the Papou; and Demetria’s 2005 Syrah was amazing with Carr Valley’s Airco, the three-milk blend cold-smoked over hickory.  You’ll need an appointment to experience Demetria Estate’s wines at its high-in-the-hills Mediterranean winery.  (Demetria is the highest-elevation vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley American Viticultural Area.)  You will feel like you’ve been in another country, and the wines Mike makes will send your taste buds to the moon!

Celebrity Soup: The Ultimate Cocktail Party

April 10, 2009 by Beverly Hills Times

The cocktail has a long history. It has inspired love affairs, break-ups, new adventures and endless stories—some true, some half true and some not true at all.  The cocktail has played a big part in music and movies, too.  Say, wouldn’t it be fun to get a dream group of cocktail lovers together and have a party?  I think it would go something like this.

”I like to have a martini.  Two at the very most.  After three I’m under the table.   After four, I’m under my host.”

Dorothy Parker

“A dry martini, One.  In a deep champagne goblet.  Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet, shake it; very well until it’s ice cold, then, add a large, thin slice of lemon-peel.  Got it?”

Ian Fleming’s James Bond

“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.”

Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca

“There comes a time in every woman’s life when the only thing that will help is a glass of champagne.”

Bette Davis in Old Acquaintance

“We went to have ourselves a drink or two, but couldn’t find an open bar.  We bought a six-pack at the liquor store and we drank it in her car.  We drank a toast to innocence; we drank a toast to now. And tried to reach beyond the emptiness, but neither one knew how.”

Dan Fogelberg, “Same Old Lang Syne”

About the mojito, a drink of white rum, mint leaves, a splash of soda, sugar and lemon: Hemmingway called it “nuclear lemonade.”

Gloria Estefan

Obviously, that cocktail party couldn’t happen in reality, but if you can’t get any A-Listers—alive or dead—to come to your next get-together, why not offer to serve their favorite drinks?  Here’s one from Julia Roberts.

Julia Roberts’ Scorpino

She liked this drink so much that she named her dog after it.

2 oz vodka

2 oz cream

1 oz Cointreau

1 large scoop lemon ice

Blend and serve.

You may need a taxi to get you home!

Party on the Road

If you are out at a cool place like Colombo’s Italian Steakhouse and Jazz Club in Eagle Rock, why not have your driver take you in style with a car from ultra-chic Black and White Rent-a-Car in Beverly Hills?

And for incredible sushi in an intriguing, comfortable atmosphere, Sushi & Kushi IMAI is a must!  It’s at the corner of San Vicente and Wilshire in Beverly Hills.

More Party Chatter

W.C. Fields was a golfer.  He belonged to the Lakeside Country Club, near Universal Studios.  Fields usually carried flasks that, he said, contained orange juice.  One day, Fields left his flask for a minute, and his golf partners replaced the contents of vodka with a less intoxicating fluid.  After swallowing a mouthful when he returned, Fields exclaimed, “Somebody put orange juice in my orange juice!”

A mega-bash in South Beach’s hottest celeb club, LIV in the Fontainebleu Hotel.  We had a kick-ass time, as did everybody else.  Kicked it with the tanned one himself, George Hamilton and cutie, Zac Efron.   Diddy hosted the rich and famous from around the world.  Mickey Rourke, Nick Lachey and tons of big shots from the music and movie industry.

New York scene: Ultra-high-end private parties with John Voight and Wilmer Valderrama hanging at top haunt, The Rose bar.

Started off last month with a candy list of A-list events.  Big hearted Wilmer went all out, hosting a charity fundraiser that rescues cute, little, furry animals.  Also there: Ken Davitian from Borat and our favorite bad dog: Marley from the movie Marley & Me.  The dog was adorable. (So was Ken!)

At the Vanity Fair Oscar party, we rocked  with our new BFF Anne Hathaway (who said she was jealous of us because we got to wear flats and she was stuck in heels.)  Ben Stiller was cute and super nice as waslollilicious John Mayer.  We stole him away from Jennifer Aniston for a second–well, maybe for a few minutes.  Valentino gave us a “Thumbs Up” for our unique style (like, duh!), Forest Whitaker was mega-nice, and everyone was having a great time.  We had our eyes on a scrumptious plate of chocolates, but OH NO … didn’t get a chance to have even one bit.  We were HOT, and everyone wanted a photo with us.  YEP … the party was all about us, the Samuels Sisters!

Coachella: Ten Years In The Desert

April 10, 2009 by Beverly Hills Times

In the heart of the Mojave Desert, just two hours east of Los Angeles, the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival has grown into one of the biggest and most popular outdoor music festivals on the West Coast. Every year in late spring throngs of music lovers flock from all over the country to the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, CA, to catch some of the biggest acts in the music industry today.

Coachella started in 1999 as a two day summer festival with 25,000 concert-goers featuring headliners Beck, Rage Against the Machine, and The Chemical Brothers. The festival did not take place in 2000 due to the poor turn out of the first year and a lack of headliners. In 2001, the promoters decided to give it another shot—this time making it a one day only event and moving it to April to avoid the intense heat of the summer. The promoters ran into problems when only months before the scheduled date of the event they still had no big headliner. With last minute help from friend, Perry Farrell, promoters were able to bring in reunited 90’s alternative hit-makers, Jane’s Addiction, to headline the main stage.

Coachella re-emerged as a two day festival in 2002 and began to gain widespread recognition with headliners like Siouxsie & the Banshees, Bjork, and Oasis. 2003 saw the festival draw its largest crowds yet with superstar acts like The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Iggy Pop & The Stooges and The Beastie Boys.  Ten years after its humble beginnings, Coachella has steadily branded itself into a three day mega festival with several stages and crowds in excess of 100,000.

More than just music…

Coachella also features huge outdoor art installations, VIP areas, tons of food and apparel vendors and designated drinking areas for the 21+ crowd. If your looking for things to do late night after the concerts, there are plenty of amazing after parties and VIP events hosted by the music industry, media and fashion industry.

COACHELLA 2009

Fri April 17: Paul McCartney, Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand, Leonard Cohen, Conor Oberst, Silversun Pickups, The Crystal Method  and more.

Sat April 18: The Killers, Thievery Corporation, The Chemical Brothers, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, MSTRKRFT, Henry Rollins and more.

Sun April 19: The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lupe Fiasco, Paul Weller, Public Enemy, Peter Bjorn & John, The Orb, X and more.

 Tips:

• Book your accomodations well in advance as the local hotels tend to book up fast.

• If you can’t get a hotel room you may want to consider one of the many scenic campgrounds in the area. Its a great way to save a few bucks and enjoy the amazing high desert nights.

• Bring a hat and plenty of sunscreen! They don’t let you bring your own water into the festival, so make sure to bring plenty of cash to buy water so you can keep yourself hydrated.

• Make sure to drink at least 16 oz of water every 2 hours.
