Jana Kohl wears many hats (but draws the line at plasticrain bonnets): Artist, psychologist, author, speaker, animal welfare advocate, and critic of bad behavior on the part of those who should know better. At an early age Kohl was concerned with how cruelty becomes legally and socially sanctioned by society. She interrupted her studies at UCLA to work for the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies. Kohl then studied fine arts in Chicago and after winning the Byron Smith Filmmaking award she was invited to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. After embarking on a career as an artist and designer she earned a doctorate in psychologyand also became a published author. Simon and Schuster published her first book, A Rare Breed of Love, in 2008. Hernext book, Unbreakable Spirit, will be published in November2011. Whether making art, writing or speaking, Kohl is a consistent advocate for those who are oppressed—animals, children, or any who are voiceless—and is a vegan for ethical, health and environmental reasons. Her art reects a fascinatingand complex personal history, broad world view and deep intellect that retains a child like innocence. Her use of vivid color and mixed media, in the context of powerful imagery, is at once sensitive and sophisticated. “I’m in awe of the mysteriesof the creative process. Ever since I was a child I wasalways creating something out of nothing. As a psychoanalyst I realize that’s a loaded statement and one I invite theviewer to ponder.”
